How To Clean Exterior Window Surfaces
Clean windows are glorious. But the first rainstorm that comes along may have you wringing your hands and a microfiber cloth at the dried-droplet state of your windows.
So how do you keep your windows looking freshly-washed for longer?
Follow our simple guide to learn how to easily keep the outside surfaces of your windows looking all clean and sparkly for longer.
1 Make your own cleaning solution.
For the outsides of your windows, you’ll need a stronger cleaning solution than for the insides. Rubbing alcohol and Castille soap (thank you, Trader Joes!) are your go-to friends for this grubby business, and the potent combination will help you power through the outside of your windows in a jiffy.
In a plastic bucket, combine:
4 tbspns Castille soap
4 tbspns rubbing alcohol
1/2 gallon warm water
Decant using a funnel into a clean spray bottle and refill as needed while you’re cleaning.
2 Use the right amount of product.
Most people make the mistake of over-saturating a surface with cleaning solution.
When you spray with reckless abandon, seeking to douse the panes in rivulets of cleaning solution, you end up spending more time wiping off the excess than actually cleaning. This is true even of the outside surfaces of your windows. If you use the right products (e.g. the wicked solution above), you can use less and have the job done faster.
Simply mist the surface of the windows with your fancypants homemade cleaning solution, allow to sit for a minute or so, and then wipe with a squeegee or an assortment of clean microfiber cloths folded into quarters.
When one side of your cloth is dirty and wet, you can simply refold it and flip it over to reveal a clean side. And hey presto, eight cleaning cloths in one!
