What Is The Difference Between Deionized & Distilled Water?

Prepare yourself for some pop science!

Distilled Water

Distilled water uses the process of evaporation and distillation to purify water. Because water has a lower boiling point than most contaminants, when water boils, the resulting steam contains little to no contaminants. Capturing this steam through distillation results in very pure water.

However, distilled water does still contain some ‘not-water’ elements, mainly organic compounds, which includes minerals.

Deionized Water

Deionized water is processed completely differently, using a special filtration system that removes basically everything other than the hydrogen and oxygen that form the water molecule. It has a purity level four times higher than distilled water!

When water is deionized, it kind of turns the water into a vacuum cleaner for minerals and the elements found in dirt. It acts like a sugar addict on a rampage, sucking up every mineral and contaminant it comes into contact with.

Water + Window Cleaning

This characteristic makes deionized water FANTASTIC for doing the final rinse on your freshly-washed windows. Regular water will always contain a variable combination of minerals, which are what cause the water ‘spots’ so often associated with a DIY window-washing job. But deionized water not only doesn’t contain any of these minerals to start with, it also suctions up any that it finds on the window’s surface from your cleaning efforts, leaving your windows sparkling and literally spotless.
